Chapter 2

1 NOW the days of David to die drew near; and he charged Solomon his son, saying,

2 I go the way of all the earth; be strong therefore, and show yourself a man;

3 And keep the charge of the LORD your God, and walk in his ways and keep his statutes, his commandments, his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and succeed wherever you go;

4 That the LORD may establish his word which he spoke concerning me, saying, If your children take heed to their ways, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail you a man on the throne of Israel.

5 Now, you know also what Joab the son of Zoriah did to me, and what he did to the two commanders of the armies of Israel, to Abner the son of Ner and to Amasa the son of Jether, whom he slew and considered them as though they were in the battle, and shed their blood with the sword that was about his loins and trampled upon it with the shoes that were on his feet.

6 Do to him therefore according to your wisdom, and let not his hoary head go down to the grave in peace.

7 But show kindness to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be of those who eat at your table; for so they ministered to me in everything when I fled from Absalom your brother.

8 And, behold, you have with you Shimei the son of Gera, of the tribe of Benjamin, of the house of Horim, who cursed me with grievous curses on the day when I went to Mahanaim; but he came down to meet me at the Jordan and I swore to him by the LORD, saying, I will not put you to death with the sword.

9 Now therefore hold him not guiltless; for you are a wise man, and know what you ought to do to him; and bring his folly on his head; and you shall bring down his hoary head with blood to Sheol.

10 So David slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David.

11 And the time that David reigned over Israel was forty years; seven years he reigned in Hebron, and thirty-three years he reigned in Jerusalem.

12 Then Solomon sat upon the throne of David his father; and his kingdom was firmly established.

13 And Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bath-sheba the mother of Solomon. And she said to him, Have you come in peace? And he said, In peace.

14 Then he said to her, I have something to say to you. And she said to him, Say on.

15 And he said to her, You know that the kingdom rightly was mine, and that all Israel were looking forward to me to be king over them; but the kingdom was taken from me and is become my brother's; for it was his from the LORD.

16 And now I make one petition of you, do not refuse me. And she said to him, Say on.

17 And he said to her, Speak to King Solomon (for he will not refuse you) that he give me Abishag the Shilommite to wife.

18 And Bath-sheba said, Very well; I will speak for you to the king.

19 Bath-sheba therefore went to King Solomon to speak to him for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her and bowed himself to her and then sat on his throne, and they brought a chair for the king's mother; and she sat on his right hand.

20 Then she said, I desire one small petition of you; do not refuse me. And the king said to her, Ask on, my mother; for I will not refuse you.

21 And she said to him, Let Abishag the Shilommite be given to Adonijah your brother to wife.

22 And King Solomon answered and said to his mother, Why do you ask Abishag the Shilommite for Adonijah? Ask for him the kingdom also; for he is my elder brother; ask even for him and for Abiathar the priest and for Joab the son of Zoriah.

23 Then King Solomon swore by the LORD, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah have not spoken this word against his own life.

24 Now therefore, as the LORD lives, who has established me and set me on the throne of David my father, and who has made me a house as he promised, Adonijah shall be put to death this day.

25 And King Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and he attacked him and slew him.

26 And to Abiathar the priest the king said, Go to Anathoth, to your own fields; for you are worthy of death; but I will not at this time put you to death because you bore the ark of the LORD before David my father and because you have been afflicted in all wherein my father was afflicted.

27 So Solomon expelled Abiathar from being priest to the LORD; that the word of the LORD might be fulfilled which he spoke concerning the house of Eli in Shiloh.

28 Now when the news reached Joab that Adonijah had been slain (for Joab had been leaning toward Adonijah and he was not leaning toward Solomon), Joab fled to the tabernacle of the LORD and took refuge on the horns of the altar.

29 And it was told King Solomon that Joab had fled to the tabernacle of the LORD and had taken refuge on the horns of the altar. Then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, Go and attack him.

30 And Benaiah came to the tabernacle of the LORD and said to him, Thus says the king. Come forth. But he said, No, I will not go out; but I will die here. And Benaiah brought the king word, saying, Thus said Joab, and thus he answered me.

31 And the king said to him, Do to him as he has said, and attack him and kill him, that you may take away the innocent blood, which Joab shed, from me and from the house of my father.

32 And the LORD shall return his blood upon his own head, because he attacked two men more righteous and better than he and slew them with the sword, my father David not knowing of it; namely, Abner the son of Ner, commander of the army of Israel; and Amasa the son of Jether, commander of the army of Judah.

33 Their blood shall therefore return upon the head of Joab and upon the head of his descendants for ever; but to David and to his descendants and to his house and to his throne shall there be peace for ever from the LORD.

34 So Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up and attacked him and slew him; and he was buried in his own sepulchre in the wilderness.

35 Then King Solomon appointed Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his stead over the army; and Zadok the priest the king appointed in the place of Abiathar.

36 And the king sent and called for Shimei, and said to him, Build yourself a house in Jerusalem and dwell there, and do not go forth from there hither and thither.

37 For on the day that you go out and cross the brook Kidron, you shall know for certain that you shall surely die; your blood shall be upon your own head.

38 And Shimei said to the king, The saying is good; as my lord the king has said, so will your servant do. So Shimei dwelt in Jerusalem many days.

39 And it came to pass at the end of three years that two of the servants of Shimei ran away to Achish the son of Maachah king of Gath. And they told Shimei, saying, Behold, your servants are in Gath.

40 And Shimei arose and saddled his ass, and went to Gath to Achish to seek his servants; and Shimei went and brought his servants from Gath.

41 And it was told King Solomon that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath and had returned.

42 And the king sent and called for Shimei, and said to him, Did I not make you to swear by the LORD, and witnessed against you, saying, Know for certain, on the day that you go out of Jerusalem and cross the brook Kidron, you shall surely die? And you said to me, The saying is good, so will I do.

43 Why then have you not kept the oath of the LORD and the commandment that I have charged you with?

44 The king said moreover to Shimei, You know all the evil of which your heart is conscious that you did to David my father; therefore the LORD shall return your wickedness upon your own head;

45 And King Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before the LORD for ever.

46 So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he went out and attacked him so that he died. And the kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon.

4 auf6965 daß der HErr3068 sein8104 Wort1697 erwecke, das er über mich geredet hat1696 und gesagt559: Werden3772 deine Kinder1121 ihre Wege1870 behüten, daß sie559 vor mir treulich571 und von ganzem Herzen3824 und von ganzer See LE5315 wandeln3212, so soll von dir nimmer gebrechen ein Mann376 auf6440 dem Stuhl3678 Israels3478.

5 Auch weißt3045 du wohl, was mir8147 getan6213 hat2026 Joab3097, der Sohn1121 Zerujas, was er tat6213 den zweien Feldhauptmännern8269 Israels3478, Abner74, dem Sohn1121 Ners5369, und Amasa6021, dem Sohn1121 Jethers3500, die er erwürget hat7760, und vergoß Kriegsblut1818 im Frieden7965 und tat5414 Kriegsblut1818 an seinen Gürtel2290, der um seine Lenden4975 war, und an seine Schuhe5275, die an seinen Füßen7272 waren.

6 Tue6213 nach deiner Weisheit2451, daß du seine grauen Haare7872 nicht mit Frieden7965 hinunter3381 zur Hölle7585 bringest.

7 Auch den Kindern1121 Barsillais1271, des Gileaditers1569, sollst du Barmherzigkeit2617 beweisen, daß sie auf6440 deinem Tisch7979 essen398. Denn also taten sie sich7126 zu6213 mir, da ich vor Absalom53, deinem Bruder251, floh1272.

8 Und siehe, du hast7650 bei dir Simei8096, den Sohn1121 Geras1617, des Sohns Jeminis von Bahurim980, der mir schändlich4834 fluchte7043 zur Zeit3117, da ich gen Mahanaim4266 ging3212. Er aber kam herab3381 mir entgegen7125 am Jordan3383. Da schwur7045 ich ihm bei dem HErrn3068 und sprach559: Ich will dich nicht töten4191 mit dem Schwert2719.

9 Du aber laß ihn nicht unschuldig5352 sein; denn du bist ein weiser2450 Mann376 und wirst wohl wissen3045, was du ihm tun6213 sollst, daß du seine grauen Haare7872 mit Blut1818 hinunter3381 in die Hölle7585 bringest.

10 Also entschlief7901 David1732 mit seinen Vätern1 und ward begraben6912 in der Stadt5892 Davids1732.

11 Die Zeit3117 aber, die David1732 König4427 gewesen4427 ist über Israel3478, ist vierzig705 Jahre8141. Sieben7651 Jahre8141 war er König4427 zu Hebron2275 und dreiunddreißig Jahre zu Jerusalem3389.

12 Und Salomo8010 saß3427 auf dem Stuhl3678 seines Vaters1 David1732, und sein Königreich4438 ward sehr3966 beständig3559.

13 Aber Adonia138, der Sohn1121 Hagiths, kam935 hinein zu Bathseba, der Mutter517 Salomos8010. Und sie sprach559: Kommst935 du auch mit Frieden7965? Er sprach559: Ja7965.

14 Und sprach559: Ich habe1696 mit dir zu reden1697. Sie sprach559: Sage her!

15 Er sprach559: Du weißest, daß das Königreich4410 mein war, und ganz Israel3478 hatte7760 sich3045 auf6440 mich gerichtet, daß ich König4427 sein sollte5437; aber nun ist das Königreich4410 gewandt und meines Bruders251 worden; von dem HErrn3068 ist‘s ihm worden.

16 Nun bitte7596 ich eine259 Bitte von6440 dir, du7592 wollest mein Angesicht nicht beschämen7725. Sie sprach559 zu ihm: Sage1696 her!

17 Er sprach559: Rede mit dem Könige4428 Salomo8010 (denn er wird dein Angesicht nicht beschämen7725), daß559 er mir7725 gebe5414 Abisag von6440 Sunem7767 zum Weibe802.

18 Bathseba sprach559: Wohl2896, ich will mit dem Könige4428 deinethalben reden1696.

19 Und Bathseba kam hinein zum Könige4428 Salomo8010, mit ihm zu reden1696 Adonias138 halben. Und der König4428 stund auf6965 und ging935 ihr3427 entgegen7125 und betete sie an; und setzte7760 sich7812 auf seinen Stuhl3678. Und es ward des Königs4428 Mutter517 ein Stuhl3678 gesetzt, daß sie sich3427 setzte zu seiner Rechten3225.

20 Und sie7725 sprach559: Ich bitte7596 eine259 kleine6996 Bitte7592 von6440 dir, du7592 wollest mein Angesicht6440 nicht beschämen7725. Der König4428 sprach559 zu ihr: Bitte, meine Mutter517, ich will7725 dein Angesicht nicht beschämen7725.

21 Sie sprach559: Laß Abisag49 von Sunem7767 deinem Bruder251 Adonia138 zum Weibe802 geben5414.

22 Da antwortete6030 der König4428 Salomo8010 und54 sprach559 zu seiner Mutter517: Warum bittest du7592 um Abisag49 von Sunem7767 dem Adonia138? Bitte7592 ihm das Königreich4410 auch; denn er ist mein größter Bruder251 und3548 hat den Priester Abjathar und Joab3097, den Sohn1121 Zerujas.

23 Und der König4428 Salomo8010 schwur bei dem HErrn3068 und sprach559: GOtt430 tue6213 mir dies und das3254, Adonia138 soll das1697 wider sein Leben5315 geredet haben7650!

24 Und nun6213, so wahr der HErr3068 lebt, der mich bestätigt hat3559 und sitzen3427 lassen auf dem Stuhl3678 meines Vaters1 David1732, und der mir ein Haus1004 gemacht hat1696, wie er2416 geredet hat: heute3117 soll Adonia138 sterben4191.

25 Und der König4428 Salomo8010 sandte7971 hin durch Benaja1141, den Sohn1121 Jojadas3077; der schlug ihn3027, daß er starb4191.

26 Und54 zu dem Priester Abjathar sprach559 der König4428: Gehe3212 hin gen Anathoth6068 zu deinem Acker7704; denn du bist des Todes4194. Aber ich will dich6031 heute3117 nicht töten4191; denn du hast5375 die376 Lade727 des HErrn136 HErrn3069 vor6440 meinem Vater1 David1732 getragen und3548 hast6031 mitgelitten, wo mein Vater1 gelitten hat.

27 Also verstieß1644 Salomo8010 den Abjathar54, daß er nicht mußte Priester3548 des HErrn3068 sein, auf daß erfüllet würde4390 des HErrn3068 Wort1697, das er über das Haus1004 Elis5941 geredet hatte1696 zu Silo7887.

28 Und310 dies Gerücht8052 kam935 vor2388 Joab3097; denn Joab3097 hatte5186 an Adonia138 gehangen5186, wiewohl nicht an Absalom53. Da310 floh5127 Joab3097 in die Hütte168 des HErrn3068 und fassete die Hörner7161 des Altars4196.

29 Und es ward dem Könige4428 Salomo8010 angesagt5046, daß Joab3097 zur Hütte168 des HErrn3068 geflohen5127 wäre; und siehe, er stehet am Altar4196. Da sandte7971 Salomo8010 hin Benaja1141, den Sohn1121 Jojadas3077, und sprach559: Gehe3212, schlage ihn6293!

30 Und da7725 Benaja1141 zur Hütte168 des HErrn3068 kam, sprach559 er zu ihm: So sagt der König4428, gehe heraus3318! Er sprach559: Nein, hie will935 ich sterben4191. Und Benaja1141 sagte559 solches1697 dem Könige4428 wieder7725 und sprach559: So hat1696 Joab3097 geredet und so hat6030 er mir geantwortet.

31 Der König4428 sprach559 zu ihm: Tue6213, wie er5493 geredet hat1696, und schlage ihn6293 und begrabe6912 ihn, daß du das Blut1818, das Joab3097 umsonst2600 vergossen hat8210, von mir tust und von meines Vaters1 Hause1004,

32 und der HErr3068 ihm bezahle sein7725 Blut1818 auf seinen Kopf7218, daß er zween Männer582 geschlagen hat6293, die gerechter6662 und besser2896 waren denn er, und hat2026 sie8147 erwürget mit dem Schwert2719, daß mein Vater1 David1732 nichts drum wußte3045, nämlich Abner74, den Sohn1121 Ners5369, den Feldhauptmann8269 über8269 Israel3478, und Amasa6021, den Sohn1121 Jethers3500, den Feldhauptmann6635 über Juda3063;

33 daß ihr Blut1818 bezahlet werde auf den7218 Kopf7218 Joabs3097 und seines Samens2233 ewiglich5769, aber David1732 und sein7725 Same2233, sein Haus1004 und sein Stuhl3678 Frieden7965 habe ewiglich5704 vor dem HErrn3068.

34 Und Benaja1141, der Sohn1121 Jojadas3077, ging5927 hinauf und schlug ihn6293 und tötete4191 ihn. Und er ward begraben6912 in seinem Hause1004 in der Wüste4057.

35 Und3548 der König4428 setzte5414 Benaja1141, den Sohn1121 Jojadas3077, an seiner Statt über das Heer6635; und54 Zadok6659, den Priester, setzte5414 der König4428 an die Statt Abjathars.

36 Und559 der König4428 sandte hin und ließ7971 Simei8096 rufen und sprach7121 zu ihm: Baue1129 dir ein Haus1004 zu Jerusalem3389 und wohne3427 daselbst; und gehe von3318 dannen nicht heraus, weder hie noch daher!

37 Welches Tages3117 du3045 wirst hinausgehen3318 und über den Bach5158 Kidron6939 gehen5674, so wisse3045, daß du des Todes4191 sterben4191 mußt; dein Blut1818 sei auf deinem Kopf7218!

38 Simei8096 sprach559 zum Könige4428: Das1697 ist eine gute2896 Meinung; wie mein Herr113, der König4428, geredet hat1696, so soll dein Knecht5650 tun6213. Also wohnete Simei8096 zu Jerusalem3389 lange7227 Zeit3117.

39 Es begab sich aber über7093 drei7969 Jahre8141, daß zween Knechte5650 dem Simei8096 entliefen1272 zu Achis397, dem Sohn1121 Maechas, dem Könige4428 zu Gath1661. Und559 es ward Simei8096 angesagt5046: Siehe, deine Knechte5650 sind zu Gath1661.

40 Da machte sich Simei8096 auf6965 und sattelte2280 seinen Esel2543 und zog3212 hin3212 gen Gath1661 zu Achis397, daß er seine Knechte5650 suchte1245. Und da er hinkam, brachte935 er seine Knechte5650 von Gath1661.

41 Und es ward1980 Salomo8010 angesagt5046, daß Simei8096 hingezogen wäre von Jerusalem3389 gen Gath1661 und wiederkommen7725.

42 Da sandte der König4428 hin und ließ7971 Simei8096 rufen und sprach7121 zu8085 ihm: Habe1697 ich5749 dir nicht geschworen7650 bei dem HErrn3068 und dir bezeuget und gesagt559, welches Tages3117 du559 würdest ausziehen3318 und hie oder dahin1980 gehen, daß du559 wissen3045 solltest, du müßtest des Todes4191 sterben4191? Und du sprachst zu mir: Ich habe eine gute2896 Meinung gehöret.

43 Warum hast du denn nicht dich8104 gehalten nach dem Eide7621 des HErrn3068 und Gebot4687, das ich dir geboten6680 habe?

44 Und der König4428 sprach559 zu Simei8096: Du7725 weißt3045 alle die Bosheit7451, der dir dein Herz3824 bewußt ist, die du meinem Vater1 David1732 getan6213 hast; der HErr3068 hat3045 deine Bosheit7451 bezahlet auf deinen Kopf7218.

45 Und der König4428 Salomo8010 ist gesegnet1288, und der Stuhl3678 Davids1732 wird beständig3559 sein vor6440 dem HErrn3068 ewiglich5704.

46 Und der König4428 gebot6680 Benaja1141, dem Sohn1121 Jojadas3077; der ging3318 hinaus und schlug ihn6293, daß er starb4191. Und das Königreich4467 ward bestätiget durch Salomos8010 Hand3027.

11 And the time that David reigned over Israel was forty years; seven years he reigned in Hebron, and thirty-three years he reigned in Jerusalem.

15 And he said to her, You know that the kingdom rightly was mine, and that all Israel were looking forward to me to be king over them; but the kingdom was taken from me and is become my brother's; for it was his from the LORD.

16 And now I make one petition of you, do not refuse me. And she said to him, Say on.

17 And he said to her, Speak to King Solomon (for he will not refuse you) that he give me Abishag the Shilommite to wife.

18 And Bath-sheba said, Very well; I will speak for you to the king.

19 Bath-sheba therefore went to King Solomon to speak to him for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her and bowed himself to her and then sat on his throne, and they brought a chair for the king's mother; and she sat on his right hand.

21 And she said to him, Let Abishag the Shilommite be given to Adonijah your brother to wife.

22 And King Solomon answered and said to his mother, Why do you ask Abishag the Shilommite for Adonijah? Ask for him the kingdom also; for he is my elder brother; ask even for him and for Abiathar the priest and for Joab the son of Zoriah.

23 Then King Solomon swore by the LORD, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah have not spoken this word against his own life.

24 Now therefore, as the LORD lives, who has established me and set me on the throne of David my father, and who has made me a house as he promised, Adonijah shall be put to death this day.

25 And King Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and he attacked him and slew him.

26 And to Abiathar the priest the king said, Go to Anathoth, to your own fields; for you are worthy of death; but I will not at this time put you to death because you bore the ark of the LORD before David my father and because you have been afflicted in all wherein my father was afflicted.

27 So Solomon expelled Abiathar from being priest to the LORD; that the word of the LORD might be fulfilled which he spoke concerning the house of Eli in Shiloh.

28 Now when the news reached Joab that Adonijah had been slain (for Joab had been leaning toward Adonijah and he was not leaning toward Solomon), Joab fled to the tabernacle of the LORD and took refuge on the horns of the altar.

29 And it was told King Solomon that Joab had fled to the tabernacle of the LORD and had taken refuge on the horns of the altar. Then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, Go and attack him.

30 And Benaiah came to the tabernacle of the LORD and said to him, Thus says the king. Come forth. But he said, No, I will not go out; but I will die here. And Benaiah brought the king word, saying, Thus said Joab, and thus he answered me.

31 And the king said to him, Do to him as he has said, and attack him and kill him, that you may take away the innocent blood, which Joab shed, from me and from the house of my father.

32 And the LORD shall return his blood upon his own head, because he attacked two men more righteous and better than he and slew them with the sword, my father David not knowing of it; namely, Abner the son of Ner, commander of the army of Israel; and Amasa the son of Jether, commander of the army of Judah.

33 Their blood shall therefore return upon the head of Joab and upon the head of his descendants for ever; but to David and to his descendants and to his house and to his throne shall there be peace for ever from the LORD.

34 So Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up and attacked him and slew him; and he was buried in his own sepulchre in the wilderness.

35 Then King Solomon appointed Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his stead over the army; and Zadok the priest the king appointed in the place of Abiathar.

36 And the king sent and called for Shimei, and said to him, Build yourself a house in Jerusalem and dwell there, and do not go forth from there hither and thither.

37 For on the day that you go out and cross the brook Kidron, you shall know for certain that you shall surely die; your blood shall be upon your own head.

38 And Shimei said to the king, The saying is good; as my lord the king has said, so will your servant do. So Shimei dwelt in Jerusalem many days.

39 And it came to pass at the end of three years that two of the servants of Shimei ran away to Achish the son of Maachah king of Gath. And they told Shimei, saying, Behold, your servants are in Gath.

40 And Shimei arose and saddled his ass, and went to Gath to Achish to seek his servants; and Shimei went and brought his servants from Gath.

41 And it was told King Solomon that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath and had returned.

42 And the king sent and called for Shimei, and said to him, Did I not make you to swear by the LORD, and witnessed against you, saying, Know for certain, on the day that you go out of Jerusalem and cross the brook Kidron, you shall surely die? And you said to me, The saying is good, so will I do.

43 Why then have you not kept the oath of the LORD and the commandment that I have charged you with?

43 Warum hast du denn nicht dich8104 gehalten nach dem Eide7621 des HErrn3068 und Gebot4687, das ich dir geboten6680 habe?

44 The king said moreover to Shimei, You know all the evil of which your heart is conscious that you did to David my father; therefore the LORD shall return your wickedness upon your own head;

44 Und der König4428 sprach559 zu Simei8096: Du7725 weißt3045 alle die Bosheit7451, der dir dein Herz3824 bewußt ist, die du meinem Vater1 David1732 getan6213 hast; der HErr3068 hat3045 deine Bosheit7451 bezahlet auf deinen Kopf7218.

45 And King Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before the LORD for ever.

45 Und der König4428 Salomo8010 ist gesegnet1288, und der Stuhl3678 Davids1732 wird beständig3559 sein vor6440 dem HErrn3068 ewiglich5704.

46 So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he went out and attacked him so that he died. And the kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon.
